How to hide an email address in a screenshot before sharing
Email addresses show up everywhere in screenshots: inbox lists, account pages, CC lines, browser profile menus, autocomplete dropdowns. Here’s a quick routine to hide them properly before a screenshot goes into Slack, a bug report, or a post.
BlotOut — try free, unlock lifetime for $2.99
Solid-black screenshot redaction in your browser. Free: 2 watermarked exports · $2.99 lifetime: unlimited, no watermark.
The 60-second routine
- Scan the whole image. Look beyond the obvious field: tab titles, profile avatars/menus, To/CC/BCC lines, signatures, notification toasts, and URL bars (some contain emails or tokens).
- Open BlotOut. Drop the screenshot into BlotOut in your browser. It isn’t uploaded.
- Box every address. Drag solid black boxes over each email. Optional auto-detect can suggest email-shaped text for you to accept.
- Export and re-check. Export the PNG, open it at 100% zoom, and confirm nothing is readable at the edges of each box.
- Share the export, not the original. Attach the exported file. Delete or keep the original privately.
Why not just blur or crop?
- Blur/pixelate can leave enough information to guess or reconstruct text, especially short predictable strings like email addresses. Solid fill leaves nothing.
- Cropping is great when the email is at an edge — but check the crop was actually applied to the exported file, not stored as an editable crop.
- Semi-transparent markers (highlighter tools) can often be “seen through” by adjusting brightness/contrast.
Common places emails hide in screenshots
- Top-right account menus in Google, Microsoft, and SaaS dashboards
- Calendar invites and attendee lists
- Git commit author lines and CI logs
- Password manager and autofill popups

FAQ
Will BlotOut find emails automatically?
It can suggest likely emails, phone numbers, and keys using in-browser OCR when the network is available. Always review — automatic detection can miss text.
Is blurring an email good enough?
It’s risky. Solid black is the safe default for text. See our guide on whether blurring a screenshot is safe.
What does it cost?
Free for 2 watermarked exports; $2.99 one-time for unlimited exports without the watermark.
Does it strip metadata too?
Exports are re-encoded PNGs, which drops the original file’s EXIF. For photos with GPS, use MetaGone.
