How to redact a PDF without uploading it

Most “free online PDF redactor” sites ask you to upload the exact document you’re trying to protect. DocBurn does the whole job inside your browser tab: pdf.js renders the pages locally, you draw the redactions, and the new PDF is built on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Permanent PDF redaction in your browser. Free: page 1 with watermark · $2.99 lifetime: all pages, no watermark.

Steps (about a minute)

  1. Open DocBurn. Go to the DocBurn app in any modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari). The page loads its scripts once; your PDF is never transmitted.
  2. Drop your PDF. Drag the file onto the page or use the file picker. Pages render locally in the tab.
  3. Draw black boxes. Drag rectangles over names, account numbers, SSNs, emails, signatures — anything that must go.
  4. Export. DocBurn rasterizes each page with the black burned into the pixels and saves a new PDF. There is no hidden text layer left under the boxes.
  5. Check the result. Open the exported PDF and try to select or search the redacted words. They aren’t there to find.

Why “no upload” matters for redaction

If a document needs redacting, it already contains something you don’t want copied. Uploading it to a third-party converter means trusting that service’s storage, retention, logs, and staff with the unredacted original. A client-side tool removes that step entirely: the file goes from your disk into your browser’s memory and back to your disk.

Trade-off to know about

Because DocBurn burns redactions into page images, the exported PDF is image-based: the remaining text isn’t selectable or searchable either. For sharing a redacted copy, that’s usually the point. Keep your original for your own records.

FAQ

Is DocBurn really free?

You can try it free: the free tier exports page 1 with a small DocBurn watermark. A one-time $2.99 lifetime unlock exports all pages without the watermark.

Does it work offline?

Once the page and its libraries have loaded, rendering and export run locally in the browser, so the file itself never needs a network connection.

Can someone copy the text under the black box?

No. The exported pages are rebuilt from burned images, so there is no underlying text object to select or copy.

Do I need to install anything?

No. It runs in the browser; there is no account and no install.
